How We Met

Jenn’s Account:

It was a breezy, beginning of Fall, Saturday afternoon in D.C.  Die-hard Penn State fans were gathered at the Rhino Bar in Georgetown, the designated spot in the District for all things Nittany Lion, Blue & White, and Joe Pa.  I was in attendance with some friends watching PSU blowout Central Michigan at Beaver Stadium. It was September 17, 2005 to be exact.

After an afternoon of downing Yuengling pitchers and Penn State shooters, I was ready to make my way back to the NOVA (my slang for Northern Virginia) for an evening with the couch and good movies.  However, 2005 was in my younger days, and I could be swayed to stay out later verrrry easily.  So, I ended up at another bar in G-Town, McFaddens, where other PSU friends had won an “All the alcohol you and your bestest friends can binge on for $20.00” late night happy hour.

Instead of my usual “find a man” dress code of cute jeans, cuter top, and killer heels, I was looking oh so unlike myself in comfy jeans, worn t-shirt, and my sneaks.  Perfect attire for football games and tailgate parties.  Not so perfect for being on the prowl.  Needless to say, I wasn’t looking for anyone.  I believe it was a few days before that I had sworn of all men, especially those of the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia varieties.

As luck would have it, our PSU party ran into another PSU party. (Yes, Penn State Alumni have infiltrated the D.C. area.  You are guaranteed to run into someone that went to Penn State every 2.59843904 seconds down here.) And that’s how I met my wonderful fiancé. His roommate at that time had gone to Penn State and knew my friend, of course from Penn State, and our PSU circles became intertwined, just like our lives would soon become.

The night does get a bit fuzzy after that (Hey, it was all you can drink!).  We talked all night, drank, danced, and like the perfect gentleman he is (heehee) walked me back to the Metro Station (the area’s version of the subway) to make sure I safely got onto the right train back home.

The part he doesn’t like to hear is about the next day.  I was in shock that he called me immediately the next afternoon, and since I was still recovering from the night before (I was still drunk on Love, I swear!), I left it go to voicemail, telling myself I’d call back tomorrow.  What guy calls the next day? Crazy!

Unbeknownst to me, Cody was having the same luck as I meeting that special someone in the area and decided to write me off right then and there!  The nerve!  He was quite surprised when I called him back the next night after a giddy and anxious day at work!

Aside from Holiday travels back home, we have been together almost every day since that night in Georgetown that changed it all!
